Definition: Hub Page

A hub page can refer to either of two things:

1) A page on a website that serves to express examples of a particular type and connect related content. For example, if you have a catalog on your website, you would want to build a hub page for each of your major categories, featuring links to many or all of each category's own products. This is a way of expressing your website's semantic theme, which helps boost search engine rankings by helping the search engines correctly understand your website's offerings.

2) A page on a specific topic that links out to a set of other pages that are also about the same topic, and which is also linked back to by a majority of those pages. Most SEOs, when speaking of hubs, do not include those italicized words, but they are what separate mere subject directories from true hubs. Getting links from subject directories is good, but getting links from hubs is better, because it helps show that your website is more deeply connected with the larger community of websites on the same topic. Links from directories will, of course, bring you traffic and the benefits of being linked to. Links from hubs will have the same benefits as links from directories, plus the added benefit of boosting your "community standing" in the eyes of the search engine ranking algorithms. The bottom line: seek links from true hubs, and link back to them like you mean it!

Hubs can also be expressed in terms of whole websites by considering the link structure of all their pages together. For example, we are linking here to The Dmoz Open Directory Project (because we think it's a great resource). Not all websites listed in the Dmoz directory link back to it, but enough do that it qualifies as a true hub website. Put another way, the site as a whole can be called a hub site because the majority of its pages are hub pages.

A true hub page confers a measure of TrustRank and authority to the pages to which it links. This helps the search engines decide to treat these recipient pages as authority pages, which boosts their website's rankings in the search engines.
